Meet Carlos Mascorro, our proud Valley legend (“puro 956”) and full-time essay enthusiast. This Brownsville, TX native is a rising senior from Sid Richardson College, double-majoring in History and the Study of Women, Gender and Sexuality. Carlos is the kind of person who says he has “one quick thought” and suddenly the group chat gets a full MLA-formatted paragraph. A diva has distractions, okay? Whether he’s typing his next masterpiece, surviving off coffee, or turning every song into his personal Broadway audition, his presence will be known. (TRUST, WE WOULD KNOW!)
A certified Hamilton lover, there is a very real chance he’ll randomly start singing like he’s making his solo debut. And yes, he might be the physical manifestation of chaos itself… but underneath it all, Carlos is loyal, caring, and always down to study with you until the sun comes up. If you need some company, coffee, or a karaoke duet partner, Carlos is your guy.

If you’re reading this it means that the MARATHONER, the MYTH, the LEGEND, HARRIET SHAPIRO is your O-Week parent!!! I fear you’ve struck gold with this bubbly Sidizen who is really a Virginian who is actually from Maryland. This Junior Biosciences major on the pre-med track loves her a good game of literally anything. From Spikeball to everything offered by Intramural Sports to Catan, she is down to play, but beware she is COMPETITIVE. As you can see, Harriet is an active girlie, and I haven’t even mentioned her DAILY 10-mile runs or the fact that she’s the goalie on Rice’s Club Soccer Team. When she’s not on a field of some sort, Harriet can be found TA’ing or meticulously crafting and writing her notes soooo small that only she can read them. Get ready for Non-Stop (Hamilton reference) fun with the most kind, genuine, and AWESOME Advisor ever!!!!!

As an Art and Business double-major, sophomore Sidizen Veronica Ye has a real passion for coloring. This vivacious young Chinese woman hails from the one and only Allen, TX. She loves Breaking Bad, her digicam, mechanical bull riding, and a good DMC (Deep Meaningful Conversation). You can usually find her painting away in Sarofim, hitting PRs at the Rec, zooming around campus on a One Wheel, or beating her own Zetamac score in McNair (it’s 71 right now and please ask her about it). Armed with her collection of funny t-shirts and an unrivaled battalion of jangling keychains, Veronica is hysterical, incredibly loyal, always down for an adventure and one of the most grounding people you’ll ever meet. Ask her any questions about marketing, art opportunities, and business (although the only type of business she conducts is monkey business) and consider yourself SO lucky for landing her as your Advisor – you don’t know how much fun you’re about to have!

Meet Afrie, your amazing O-Week Advisor! Afrie is a junior Global Affairs major and proud Atlanta girl. She’ll bring ATL up at least 500 times, so just smile and nod. When she's not charming customers at Chaus or repping her home college of Lovett, you'll find her hanging with friends and doing what she does best: looking out for the people around her. Lucky for you, those people are you guys! Afrie will replace any homesickness with new memories before you even realize it. Fair warning though: pause the pilates, because this girl will have you laughing until your core is burning. She loves to laugh, and the energy she brings to a room is infectious. Afrie is an amazing person to have in your corner, so get ready for a week of unstoppable laughter and genuine care. Pro-Tip: Ask about her favorite movies to binge or her Ethiopian culture. You’re welcome in advance.

Meet Alex Yan, Will Rice College’s resident Operations Research mind, Class of 2029, all the way from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin (yes, that’s a real place, and yes, he was probably the only Asian there). Alex came to Rice with a tennis game that honestly could’ve gone D1, but he decided to share his talents with the rest of us instead. When he’s not on the courts or crunching numbers, you can find him at karaoke giving every song his full effort. The man has zero hesitation and plenty of confidence. A Valorant regular by night and a genuinely warm, funny guy around the clock, Alex is the kind of person who quietly makes a room better.
