  • ONLY IN OHIO! Will you find such a devoted, caring, and most importantly, hilarious Advisor. DaVonte, known to all as Von, is one of Hanszen’s Architecture students who spends his days drawing a variety of sketches and cartoons on his iPad (as a true iPad kid). If you ever need a recommendation for the next horror movie to watch, Von is the perfect person to go to (don’t get him started on Texas Chainsaw Massacre). Or if you just want a friend to talk to about the most random things, he will always be there for you. Have any leftovers? Please pass them his way! Some of his favorite foods/drinks include (and definitely not limited to): melons, milk—especially banana milk, sweet tea, rice, chicken, and jalapeno hot cheetos!

  • Meet Jalen, pre-med Biology and Sports Medicine god hailing from Pearland, TX, quiet, focused, and lowkey nonchalant but not really when it comes to hotpot, South Park, ESPN, protein powder, and overall the most niche trivia topics. When he’s not at the library, he’s probably at the gym doing anything but cardio but still maintaining a physique reminiscent of that of Joe Swanson’s from Family Guy, Jalen’s favorite show and source of memes. Catch Jalen walking across campus with AirPods in, nodding to a mix of J. Cole, lo-fi beats, and the occasional rogue country track—his playlist is as unpredictable as his meme references. He’s the type to be casually staring into the distance, then pivot to passionately debating whether LeBron really is the GOAT (spoiler: he thinks he is, but he’s open to discussion). Though he may appear a tad reserved at first sight, Jalen’s one of the most dependable people you’ll meet at Rice, whether you need help with reciting glycolysis and learning how to use Anki or a shoulder to lean on when things get tough. Underneath the calm exterior is someone who cares deeply about his friends and making sure everyone around him is doing okay. Even if he checks in with a simple “you good?” that somehow says everything.

  • EVERYONE LOVES PAIGE RENNIE! You may think she’s Australian? Nah. You think she’s South African? Nah… the fact that she’s from Harare, Zimbabwe is her pride and joy! Another pride and joy of hers is her coffee a day—but she will never claim that she’s a coffee person, she just needs her sweet treat/pick me up. Sweet treats and Kinder Buenos are the way to her heart. Apart from eating Buenos, you will catch her in the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen working on her engineering projects, or maybe the second floor of Sid, her home. You may wonder why a Zimbabwean has landed in Houston, Texas, but based on her playlist, I think she belongs here more than most Texans. Also, even though she is only going to be a junior, her several times at the Houston Rodeo have been dramatically life changing. Other than Paige’s insane Google Calendar with TAing, Mechanical Engineering, and doing things with her campus ministry Cru, she makes you feel seen, heard, and loved. Paige is incredible, and you are so lucky to have her as an O-Week Parent!!
