A-ha-Laddin: A whole new sid

  • Is that your cool, classic rock loving uncle? Nope! It’s just Laura. A junior neuroscience major hailing from San Antonio, Laura is the grooviest, most tubular future lawyer/baker you’ll ever meet. Whether she’s chugging a large drip coffee from chaus (no milk) or listening to the Eagles’ entire discography, Laura’s always up for a good time. Also be sure to ask her about her passions for graphic design and saving lives on REMS. Never challenge her to a battle in Michael Jackson Dance Experience, because you will almost certainly lose (but she won’t make you feel bad about it, because she’s humble like that). If you’re ever looking for someone to share some breakfast tacos or get up to some crazy hijinks with, Laura’s your girl. Y’all are so lucky that she is your O-Week advisor, and it guarantees that it will be the greatest week of all time!

  • Everyone get ready for the best (Rio Grande) Valley rat you’ve ever met! Raised in Brownsville, TX (PURO 956!!) and Matamoros, México, this Class of ‘27 hunk is a pre-law king majoring in History and Latin American/Latinx Studies and minoring in SWGS. When he’s not buying his 4th cup of Chaus coffee of the day, Carlitos is blessing Rice campus with his angelic voice as a member of the Apollos. But his passion for music doesn’t end there—this man LOVES dancing to reggaeton at parties (if you can call it dancing). This sophomore Sidizen is passionate about making an impact (see: Rice Pride, HACER, and Alternative Spring Break (ASB)), and that starts with making you feel included! Whether you need someone to eat hot dogs with at 4 am or someone to feed your delusions, Carlos is your man, and he’s ready to give you the experience of a lifetime!

  • It's baddie o’clock and the baddest of them all is here. Miss Mirely Nieto comes from the desert city of Tucson, Arizona. When she is not napping in a hidden corner of Sid, you can find this iconic Sid senior and O-Week videographer SERVING as the Sid Vice-President, cooking up a new tradition every month as Traditions Committee Chair, or spilling tea in Sid Commons. This KINE major decided to also become a HEAL major in her last year, and she is slaying at both (likeeee quiz her on the number of grams of protein in a chicken breast). Fueled with a Cherry Slush Alani Nu in hand, Mirely is one of the funniest people you will meet at Sid. With her constant jokes and cute off-campus apartment hangouts, Mirely will keep you entertained endlessly throughout the year. Seriously, you got lucky with Mirely as your advisor so get ready to slay, bond, and laugh non-stop all week.

  • The pinnacle of excellence that is Abigail Vargheese cannot be summed up a mere blurb, but know that being awarded her as your o-week mother is equivalent to winning the lottery. Despite her g-cal being consumed by seemingly every club on campus, tour guiding, and honing her incredible dance moves on Rice Riyaaz, she will make time to feed you delicious Inodmie noodles and listen empathetically to all your worries. Abigail is studying biology on the pre-med track, and while she’s only a rising junior, I’d trust Abigail with my life during any emergency (even though she’s too humble to admit it). After arriving at Sid from her hometown of Clinton, Mississippi, she began gifting people sports beverages and textbooks; but don’t try to give her something in return (she simply can’t accept!). Abigail is both reliable and genuine, and you can count on her to support you throughout your Rice career.

  • Meet Jason, a passionate car enthusiast and DJ from Beijing who spins beats both on the turntables and on the road. Did I forget to mention that he is a cook? Not only can this junior Will Ricer cook a full steak dinner (not really) but also cook up some fire beats! Jason is also more of a lifter than a mechanical engineer. Instead of finding the max stress a material can withstand, he finds his max bench PR on an exam night at the Rec. Jason is always down to explore new spots in Houston, so if you ever want to go explore or just a late night drive, he might just be the right guy. Above all, Jason is a very studious and determined hunk. He always looks out for those he cares for and I have no doubt that y’all will be in good hands for O-week.
